They consisted of VHF police, fire and public service channels.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/resolver1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-412\" title=\"resolver\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/resolver1-300x191.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/resolver1-300x191.jpg 300w, http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/resolver1-1024x653.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/resolver1.jpg 1665w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I ended up getting an internship at APG working for the US Army doing electronic technician work when I was\u00a016 years old. \u00a0I worked summers at the proving ground until my junior year in college. \u00a0While pursuing my degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Maryland, I joined the Ham Radio club on campus, W3EAX. \u00a0I earned my first license as a novice with the callsign KA3QHL in 1986. \u00a0What a horrible call for CW. \u00a0I immediately upgraded to Technician and by the end of the year I upgraded to General and received the new call N3FHW which I have had since. \u00a0I ended up changing my major in my junior year to Economics and earned by BA in 1988. \u00a0I was the president of the radio club at U of MD for 2 years. \u00a0Great memories from that time.<\/p>\n<p>After college I had minimal stations running 2m in the car and minimal HF with a small station in my apartment and then later when I moved to my\u00a0townhouse. \u00a0I was done hamming by about 1995. \u00a0There are some minimal QSOs in my log book after that time but very few.\u00a0 I moved from my townhouse in Arbutus, MD to my current QTH in Hampstead, MD in 2003.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/0480.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-409\" title=\"0480\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/0480-300x151.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/0480-300x151.jpg 300w, http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/0480.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>In 2012 we were doing renovations in our house and I was up in the attic doing some work wiring the bedroom for sound when I looked around and said, &#8220;Bet I could fit an antenna up here and get back on the air&#8221;. \u00a0So I bought a G5RV mini on Ebay and it stretches the length of my attic pointing due East\/West.\u00a0 I later installed a second G5RV mini in\u00a0an inverted V pointing North\/South.\u00a0I used my old TS-120 for about 10 QSOs and realized the age and non-use had taken its toll. \u00a0So I drove to DE to HRO and bought a new TS-480SAT which I love.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/blue-top.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-944\" alt=\"blue-top\" src=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/blue-top-300x57.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"57\" srcset=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/blue-top-300x57.png 300w, http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/blue-top.png 780w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I use Ham Radio Deluxe to run my station.\u00a0 It is a excellent program for CAT control, working digital modes and logging.\u00a0 I highly recommend it!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/ProductHeader.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-415\" title=\"ProductHeader\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/ProductHeader-300x116.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"116\" srcset=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/ProductHeader-300x116.jpg 300w, http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/ProductHeader.jpg 490w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I ended up getting an Icom ID-880 for 2m mobile. \u00a0I spend a lot of time on the road locally for work. \u00a0I work the local repeaters and D-Star. <a href=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/imagesCAU3OAZQ.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-416\" title=\"imagesCAU3OAZQ\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/imagesCAU3OAZQ.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a>I also have a DV-Dongle for working D-Star from home. The dongle Is a great way being on D-Star without the expense of a radio in the shack.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/d710.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-939 alignleft\" alt=\"d710\" src=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/d710.png\" width=\"251\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a>I also installed a Kenwood TM-D710 in the shack for use on the repeaters and simplex on 2m and 70cm.\u00a0 This radio is also capable of using APRS and communicating with the ISS via ARISS.\u00a0 When not being actively used, it is setup as a Echolink node, simplex on 446.750MHZ so I can use the HT in and around my house to communicate on Echolink.\u00a0 The node number is 853200 and is usually only running 5 watts.<a href=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Baofeng_UV-5R_Camo.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-946 alignright\" alt=\"Baofeng_UV-5R_Camo\" src=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Baofeng_UV-5R_Camo-207x300.jpg\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Baofeng_UV-5R_Camo-207x300.jpg 207w, http:\/\/n3fhw.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Baofeng_UV-5R_Camo.jpg 414w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I also bought a Baofeng UV-5R (yes the camo one) and a Arrow II Antenna and\u00a0use is mostly\u00a0for\u00a0doing satellite work on the FM satellites AO-27 and SO-50. \u00a0A satellite station handheld for under $200.<\/p>\n<p>I have posted some of my QSOs using my satellite setup and my HF setup on the blog.
